Stainless Steel Grade 316 is a molybdenum-bearing austenitic alloy. The addition of molybdenum significantly increases resistance to localized pitting and crevice corrosion, especially in salt-water and chloride-heavy environments. The low carbon variant, 316L, reduces the vulnerability to intergranular sensitization. When welding standard 316, temperatures between 425°C and 860°C can trigger chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries, compromising the local corrosion barrier. SS 316L mitigates this issue, maintaining excellent structural integrity and corrosion resistance in post-welded assemblies.
While SS 304 remains popular for standard applications, it fails under exposure to warm chloride solutions, leading to pitting and Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC). SS 316 provides the necessary resistance for marine, chemical, and petrochemical plants. For extreme applications, such as deepwater operations, duplex structures like Duplex 2205 and Super Duplex 2507 double the mechanical yield strength while offering superior resistance to chloride SCC.
