TP304L (UNS S30403) represents the ultra-low carbon variant of the classical TP304 austenitic stainless steel grade. Standard TP304 contains a maximum of 0.08% carbon, whereas TP304L restricts carbon content to 0.03% or lower. This subtle difference is critical for welding applications.
During welding procedures, temperatures between 425°C and 860°C (797°F to 1580°F) cause chromium and carbon to react, leading to chromium carbide precipitation along grain boundaries. This zone, depleted of chromium, becomes highly vulnerable to intergranular corrosion (IGC). By maintaining carbon under 0.03%, TP304L prevents carbide formation, preserving corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of welded structures.
