Technical Whitepaper: 304 Stainless Steel Coil

A comprehensive engineering analysis of grade 304, material characteristics, processing mechanics, and life-cycle performance.

1. Alloy Composition & Microstructure Stability

Grade 304 (UNS S30400 / EN 1.4301) is the standard alloy of the austenitic stainless steel class, formulated with a minimum of 18% chromium and 8% nickel. The austenitic microstructure is stabilized by the nickel addition, allowing the material to retain its non-magnetic profile and mechanical properties across a temperature range from cryogenic levels up to 870°C.

Liaocheng Sihe monitors the carbon content within our melt runs. For structural or high-temperature application baselines, we balance the chromium-nickel equivalents to suppress the precipitation of chromium carbides at grain boundaries in the critical heat-affected zone (HAZ) during welding. For applications requiring extensive welding operations, we offer 304L (UNS S30403), limiting carbon to 0.03% to mitigate intergranular corrosion vulnerability.

2. Cold Drawing and Bright Annealing (BA) Processing

Our coiled tubes undergo multi-pass cold drawing to achieve dimensional precision and surface characteristics. Cold-working increases the yield and tensile strength of the alloy through work hardening. To restore ductility and corrosion resistance, the tubing is processed through our in-line bright annealing lines.

Bright annealing is conducted in a controlled, oxygen-free hydrogen/nitrogen protective atmosphere at temperatures between 1040°C and 1150°C, followed by rapid cooling. This process dissolves precipitated carbides back into the austenitic matrix and maintains a clean, scale-free, and reflective surface finish, eliminating the need for subsequent acid pickling and passivation for most clean gas or fluid systems.

316L (UNS S31603) ≤ 0.03 ≤ 2.00 ≤ 0.75 ≤ 0.045 ≤ 0.030 16.0 - 18.0 10.0 - 14.0 ≤ 0.10

3. Future Engineering Trends: Thin-Wall Optimization and High-Pressure Service

In modern industrial design, weight reduction and material efficiency are driving the adoption of thin-wall coiled tubing with wall thicknesses under 0.8 mm. This transition is supported by advances in grain-size control and micro-alloying, which allow for high pressure-retaining capabilities without increasing material volume.

The industry is also focusing on surface electropolishing (EP) inside the ID (inner diameter) of coiled tubing. This achieves an average surface roughness (Ra) of less than 0.25 µm, which is essential for preventing particulate contamination in pharmaceutical manufacturing and semiconductor gas lines.

Production Automation and Shipping Preparation

Modern industrial sourcing requires stable product quality and delivery timelines. At Liaocheng Sihe, we address this demand through our digital manufacturing environment, integrating raw material batch tracking with downstream cold-working processes.

Our raw materials are sourced from domestic manufacturers (such as Tsingshan and TISCO) and verified through spectral and chemical testing. We operate three specialized coiling lines that can manufacture continuous lengths up to 32,800 feet (10,000 meters) without orbital welds. This reduces potential leak points in deepwater oil exploration umbilicals and chemical plant trace heating loops.

Our quality assurance program is backed by a testing laboratory capable of performing:
• 100% Non-Destructive Eddy Current Testing (ECT)
• In-line Hydrostatic Pressure testing up to 80 MPa
• Pneumatic / Air Tightness testing for control line assemblies
• Microstructural grain size examinations
• Mechanical tests including flaring, flattening, reverse-bending, and hardness testing

Industrial Buyer FAQ: Commercial & Technical Guidance

Essential pricing, ordering, compliance, and material engineering information for global procurement managers.

What are your prices?
Our prices are subject to change depending on supply, raw material alloy surcharges (such as nickel, chromium, and molybdenum markets), and other market factors. We will send you an updated price list after your company contacts us with specific grade, dimensional range, and quantity requirements.
Do you have a minimum order quantity (MOQ)?
Yes, we require all international orders to have an ongoing minimum order quantity. For standard 304 and 316L coiled tubing sizes, our general MOQ is 500 kilograms per specification. If you are looking to resell or sample in smaller quantities, we recommend contacting our sales desk to check current inventory levels and available overruns.
Can you supply the relevant documentation?
Yes, we can provide the majority of necessary regulatory and trade documentation, including Mill Test Certificates (MTC) according to EN 10204 3.1, Certificate of Origin (Form A, Form E, or CO), Certificate of Conformance (CoC), export customs declarations, and comprehensive transport insurance policies.
What is the average lead time?
For tooling-configured sample runs, the average lead time is approximately 7 days. For volume production batches, the lead time is 20 to 30 days after receipt of the deposit. Lead times become effective when we have received your deposit payment and final technical drawings approval. If our production schedule does not align with your installation project timeline, please consult our logistics team. We will adjust production priorities where possible to meet project deadlines.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept payments via direct wire transfer (T/T), Letter of Credit (L/C) at sight, Western Union, and PayPal. Our standard terms are a 30% deposit in advance, with the remaining 70% balance settled against a copy of the Bill of Lading (B/L).
What is your product quality warranty policy?
We warrant all materials, dimensional tolerances, and workmanship. Our priority is your satisfaction with our products. Regardless of whether issues arise within or outside the formal warranty period, our engineering and quality teams are committed to resolving technical challenges to the customer's satisfaction.
Do you guarantee safe and secure delivery of products?
Yes, we package all coiled tubing on reinforced wooden or steel reels, wrapped in protective plastic sheathing to prevent seawater contamination and transit deformation. Specialist packaging (e.g., customized crates, non-standard dimensions, or air transport frames) may incur additional costs, which are detailed in our quotes.
How are shipping fees calculated?
Shipping fees are determined by the cargo weight, volume, selected shipping channel (sea freight, air freight, or express courier), and destination port terms (FOB, CIF, DDP). Sea freight is typically the most cost-effective solution for large-volume industrial coil deliveries. We provide exact transport quotes once order volumes and destination details are finalized.
How does Liaocheng Sihe prevent stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in chloride-rich environments?
While standard grade 304 provides general corrosion resistance, it is susceptible to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking (SCC) at temperatures above 60°C. For these conditions, we recommend opting for our Duplex 2205 or Incoloy 825 coils. These materials feature higher levels of nickel, chromium, and molybdenum, which improve resistance to chloride pitting and SCC.
