316L Stainless Steel Metallurgy & Material Science

A comprehensive breakdown of alloy composition, corrosion resistance indices, and operational parameters for structural designers and engineering procurement professionals.

Austenitic stainless steel grade 316L (UNS S31603) is the low-carbon variant of the standard 316 alloy. By strictly limiting the carbon threshold to a maximum of 0.03%, this material eliminates the risk of chromium carbide precipitation along the grain boundaries during high-temperature thermal exposure (such as welding). This property prevents intergranular corrosion, allowing the material to be used in heavy welded structures without post-weld annealing.

The addition of Molybdenum (2.0% to 3.0%) chemically alters the alloy's passivity. This increases the material's resistance to localized pitting and crevice corrosion, especially in environments rich in chloride ions, such as seawater, salt spray, and chlorinated sanitation systems. The pitting resistance of this alloy is quantified by the Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN), calculated as:

PREN = %Cr + 3.3 * %Mo + 16 * %N

While standard 304 stainless steel displays a PREN of approximately 18 to 20, 316L regularly achieves a PREN score between 23 and 25, signifying vastly superior endurance in aggressive marine and industrial media.

Yes, we require all international orders to have an ongoing minimum order quantity. If you are looking to resell or procure in smaller quantities, please contact our team to check stock availability.
Can you supply the relevant documentation?

What is the average lead time for deliveries?
For samples, the lead time is about 7 days. For mass production, the typical lead time is 20-30 days after receiving the deposit payment. Lead times become effective when we have received your deposit and final technical drawings approval. We will coordinate with your project team to accommodate deadlines.
What payment methods do you accept?
You can complete transactions via bank transfer (T/T), Western Union, or PayPal. Our standard terms are a 30% deposit in advance, with the 70% balance due against the copy of the Bill of Lading (B/L).
What is the product warranty?
We warranty our materials and workmanship. Our commitment is to ensure satisfaction with our products. We address and resolve all customer issues to mutual satisfaction, regardless of warranty duration.
Do you guarantee safe and secure delivery of products?

How are shipping fees calculated?
Shipping costs depend on the delivery method. Ocean freight is the standard solution for high-tonnage orders, while air freight is available for urgent custom items. Exact freight rates can be provided once dimensions, weight, and delivery destination are confirmed.
