Grade 202 is an austenitic chromium-manganese-nickel stainless steel modified with nitrogen. By replacing a portion of the nickel content with manganese and nitrogen, it achieves a yield strength nearly double that of traditional Grade 304 while offering significant cost stability against volatile global nickel prices.

The inclusion of 7.5% - 10% Manganese in Grade 202 stabilizes the austenitic matrix, allowing for a reduction in expensive Nickel. The introduction of Nitrogen (N) acts as a strong interstitial solid-solution strengthening agent, increasing the yield strength by approximately 35% compared to Grade 304. With a Chromium level of 17% and lower Nickel content, Grade 202 exhibits moderate corrosion resistance. Its Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) is lower than Grade 304, meaning it is not recommended for direct immersion in marine salt-spray zones or acidic chemical process pipes. However, for interior structural tubes, enclosed exhaust systems, and climate-controlled agricultural applications, it delivers reliable durability at a significantly lower initial cost.
