AISI 316 is an austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel containing molybdenum. The addition of molybdenum improves general corrosion resistance, enhances resistance to pitting from chloride ion solutions, and provides increased strength at elevated temperatures. 316L is the low-carbon version of 316, which prevents sensitisation during welding operations, securing the grain boundaries from carbide precipitation and preserving long-term structural integrity.
