Austenitic Grade 321H is specifically designed for high-temperature service. By optimizing the carbon content within the range of 0.04% to 0.10%, this material exhibits superior creep properties and higher stress-rupture strength compared to standard Grade 321 or 304L variations.
The primary hazard during welding and high-temperature operation of standard austenitic stainless steels is chromium carbide precipitation. This occurs in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) within the critical temperature range of 800°F to 1500°F (427°C to 816°C). When chromium carbides precipitate at the grain boundaries, adjacent areas are depleted of chromium, causing intergranular corrosion (sensitization).
Grade 321H resolves this vulnerability by introducing Titanium (Ti) into the alloy chemistry. The minimum titanium content is determined by a chemical balance equation:
Titanium has a stronger chemical affinity for carbon than chromium. It forms stable titanium carbides (TiC) distributed throughout the grains, preventing chromium carbides from forming. As a result, 321H remains immune to intergranular corrosion, maintaining its integrity under thermal cycling conditions.
