The primary hazard during welding and high-temperature operation of standard austenitic stainless steels is chromium carbide precipitation. This occurs in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) within the critical temperature range of 800°F to 1500°F (427°C to 816°C). When chromium carbides precipitate at the grain boundaries, adjacent areas are depleted of chromium, causing intergranular corrosion (sensitization).

Grade 321H resolves this vulnerability by introducing Titanium (Ti) into the alloy chemistry. The minimum titanium content is determined by a chemical balance equation:
