Bright Annealed (BA) sheets and coils are processed in a controlled atmosphere furnace, typically utilizing a dry hydrogen or nitrogen-hydrogen mixed environment. Unlike conventional hot-rolled or cold-rolled finishes (such as No. 1 or 2B) which undergo pickling and passivation that can dull the metallic surface, bright annealing preserves the mirror-like reflective finish. This prevents surface oxides from forming, resulting in an exceptionally smooth, bright, and clean surface topography with ultra-low surface roughness (Ra).

A rougher surface facilitates particle entrapment and bacterial colonization, whereas a BA finish minimizes micro-crevice formation, making it easy to sanitize and clean. By annealing in an oxygen-free, pure hydrogen gas atmosphere, the chromium oxides on the surface of the stainless steel are chemically reduced back to metallic chromium. This prevents the depletion of chromium at the surface layer, preserving its intrinsic passive layer without the necessity of aggressive acid pickling. This results in superior pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in demanding marine and chemical environments.
