The ASTM A269 specification covers nominal-wall-thickness, seamless, and welded austenitic steel tubing for general corrosion-resisting and low- or high-temperature service. ASTM A269 TP316 (and its low-carbon counterpart TP316L) is widely recognized as the industry benchmark for liquid and gas distribution systems where aggressive chemical exposure is expected.
By incorporating 2% to 3% Molybdenum, the austenitic matrix of 316 grade steel offers dramatically increased resistance to localized pitting and crevice corrosion, especially in high-chloride marine environments. The low-carbon profile of 316L (carbon content restricted to ≤ 0.030%) prevents carbide precipitation during welding operations, securing the grain structure against intergranular corrosion.
