Grade 321 (UNS S32100) is an austenitic stainless steel stabilized with titanium. The primary advantage of 321 is its excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion following exposure to high temperatures in the chromium carbide precipitation range from 800°F to 1500°F (427°C to 816°C). Unlike standard 304, the addition of titanium binds with carbon to form titanium carbides, which are far more stable than chromium carbides. This critical metallurgical reaction preserves the chromium matrix near grain boundaries, preventing localized galvanic attack and structural degradation.
